After three years, one album and more than a hundred concerts, Šmity is leaving the band. He helped the band in the moment we needed it the most and he elevated some of our skills to new heights. We would like to thank him for all this and we wish him well. Let all his dreams and plans come through smoothly and fast!

The very last concert together with Šmity will be next week in U-Klub Olomouc, 9/12/2009. Come to salute him. As a guests we proudly present Genius Mess Poets and DJ squad The Fakes (DJ Sin vs. Destroyer set). The evening will be powered by our deer friend Jagermeister.

We would like to announce that the new member of The Prostitutes who is going to take bass duties on a regular basis is Adam Piaf Vopička, lead singer and guitarist of Prague’s indie-outfit Fake Tapes. You’ve had already a chance to see him playing with us on many concerts during this year when Šmity was touring with Black Lips. Adam, welcome on board and we wish you to maintain your young blood in a companion of mature prostitutes.

We’ve been busy last weeks and we still are. You saw us: recording, protesting against policy of Board of Czech Radio, playing live at radio Wave.

THE NEW ALBUM, THE FIRST SINGLE, MUSIC VIDEO AND NEW TOUR

So, after two years of intense gigging and preparation of new material we finally recorded 14 tracks to be further developed. It took us less than two weeks in David Koller’s Cox studio where we were with producer Dušan Neuwert and sound engineer Petr Kaláb. Now, we are finalizing the songs in Tata Bojs studio and our own recording home facilities, mainly at my sweet Radiotron studio. In a week we should be ready with edits and additional recording and Dušan and us should move to Soundsquare studios to mix and master the record.

We are still not ready to announce the name of the forthcoming album, but we are pretty close. The record is playing a lot with the theme of all these hometown lost and dull souls around us and is conceived a bit as a film soundtrack, at least we are talking about it like this . One thing for sure, the first single is going to be released in the second half of January 2009 and it’s name is Leave It Like It Is. It is a rather not very cheerful duet of Adrian T. Bell and La Petite Sonja (Kill The Dandies!, ex-The Nihilists). I’ve got f***ing goose-skin everytime I listen to it so I hope you will have too.

Directing duo Mods, me and Michal Nohejl, we just returned from freezing Baltic Sea in Poland where we were shooting a music video for this song. Michal plays the main character together with his girlfriend, actress Petra Nesvačilová. The video is sponsored and produced by Bistro Films.

We can confirm that the whole new album is going to be released in March 2009 and immediately after the release we are going to tour all over CZ and also some other European countries.

THE LAST DISTORTION-DANCING-DESTRUCTION CONCERT

The Prostitutes will change. They already did, but they’re going to change more. The last concert of Distortion-Dancing-Destruction tour is going to take place in Rock Café, the same club we played our first gig 3 years ago, 27th December 2008, 8PM. Come and say goodbye to the old with us at this riotous post-christmas post-punk party!

Folk-rock?

Saturday night was cool. We went to Rožnov pod Radhoštěm to play local festival Folkrockování. The weather was terrible, but people were warm, the production almost fantastic and we were heading one-off strange gig: Šmity is on holiday and we decided not to cancel the gig and play without a bass guitar. We managed to play almost everything this way except She’s Dead and Don’t Give A Damn where the bass lines are really prominent and build the song. Adrian was playing second guitar in couple of songs and he lost his virginity as a rock guitarist straight on stage. We were playing a lot more than usual playlist. We saw Distortion Dancing Destruction on the list together with Wired To Kill and Spider and we also played with a decent success for the very first time on the public song Leave It Like It Is – probably the first single from in-progress new album. After the gig we went to the hotel and spend some serious time jamming (turning ourselves into folk band) and writing down some really cool songs and some real solid bullshit, mainly about “Space Dust”, some mythical Merlin’s powder Alex found in a buffet and insisted on that it is one of the most necessary and magical things to use during sex. Believe or not, I think that Space Dust is normální šumák. It was a hard working day with a slight headache today for me but I think it was worthy, wasn’t it?

Majors, indies, home project studio, huge hall and hi-end equipment, acoustic, electronic, experimental, classic, sponsors, self-financed, half there, half way to go, star producer, self-produced, full of guests, four member outfit, local, global. Hope we will be able to narrow our way a bit soon. Till then we will be working on our second album as we used to work: as total anarchists. Last week we fully finished another song, we recorded a silly bossanova cover of Holiday (waiting for Brazilian guest vocal), prerecorded a real rock anthem and came up with some more ideas completely alienating current vision of our album. In the meantime we are hunting for partners, sponsors and labels to finish and release the record as soon as possible finding this market rather implosive. There is a gap that we have to jump over. Or build a bridge. Or just find another way. How many times we will come to this same conclusion? And how many times we will trust the old ways believing in a change again? Still dizzy but still going forward, thats the way we do it

Aftermath. Part One.

It was like a dream. Tucznak, shooting all this for three days, wrote a nice post which sums it up for me quite well. “Internet makes the world smaller” finally got a real picture for me. We met people who really dare to be different without being unwillingly (or intentionally) silly. They do it by their spontaneity, fervid effort and extraordinary sincerity – something we use to call “rocknroll”.

I finally met my e-friend Anne Marie and we had a chance to “take drugs together”* and it was simply great. Mr. Abe Cruz aka The Dad made a show like he was on stage every night for many years and people loved it (according to what i heard on stage). Somebody mentioned Buena Vista Social Club and I nodded smiling. We had two beautiful evenings inside two nice restaurants, super-quick rehearsal, TV appearance, the Dad made couple of interviews for diverse media and we had a great time at the festival on stage together. 3 days stay is a luxury for a rock-star on tour to spend in one country, isn’t it?

Hard to describe the atmosphere, so I will rather use videos to talk about it instead of words.

Knock, knock! The Dad is coming!

In couple of hours, 10AM exactly, The Dad and his family will land at Prague’s airport. We can’t wait. We planned everything properly, bought presents, made schedules, transport plans, media meetings. I think now we are ready. Adrian and Stevie will wait for Abe Cruz and his family at the airport (together with Tucznak, who will take care of camera and will be shooting doc about this official celebs’ visit . They will take our guests to the hotel and in the evening we will go for a drink or two following our guests being in advantage (they will have – 6 hours). The next day in the evening we will rehearse for the friday’s Rock for People concert (starting 15.50 at green stage). If you are interested, don’t miss this one-and-only show with The Dad on stage! More info here. After the rehearsal we will go to Czech TV for a live interview in Události v kultuře at 21.00 and then for a dinner in a restaurant. On friday, 4th of July (!), we will leave Prague around 12 o’clock heading to Hradec Králové airport to play at the festival. Hopefuly, the show will be good. On Staurday Abe and his famiy are going back to U.S: Normal boring life of superstars as we know it.

If the spirit of the band needed to be elevated in last weeks, the best thing possible happened to us during the end of this week. We started recording of the second album and in the first two days we have recorded four tracks plus having two already recorded in a past in a can. We finally choose Dušan Neuwerth as a producer and we had a fantastic time collaborating with him. Recording in studio Moskva at Barrandov Film Studios, Prague we took all advantages of this vintage/modern vintage studio and achieved sound and atmosphere we were dreaming about from the day we finished the debut album. With a support of sound engineer Lukáš and manager of the studio Risto we had everything we needed being focused just on music. We recorded some really heavy stuff, some really weird stuff and some quite exceptional stuff for a post-punk band. See for yourself:

Festival season just started (yesterday we played Mezi Ploty in Prague) and one of the most important european music projects and festivals – Europavox – just released their annual compilation of the best european music. We are proud that our song Don’t give a Damn was chosen as one of the most interesting songs in the Rock category and is a part of this double CD containing 31 songs from the whole Europe.

We went to the beautiful south to the city Bob and Dave think is a capitol of the world and Anheuser and Bush would sleep better if a nuclear bomb would raze this place out of planet Earth. Yes, we are talking about České Budějovice, a city well known for way more things apart from Budweiser Budvar but I just can’t figure out any of them except the beer and Drain, a rising heavy metal thunder combining rocknroll, grunge and metal. We came to the club called Marty’s Club and it was a pleasant place with a good bar and cool bartenders, with the nice guys from Drain and with the most horrible monitor speakers we saw in a while. And, with no Marty. We brought Paul Matthews aka Ladies Fitness Studio carrying just a two-string guitar (turning into one-string). Starting with his performance, Paul was just amazing. He did entertain people and grabbed their attention with the instrument I already described and his voice only, soon joined for a while by Adrian, Luk and some guy on drums, turning his set into spontaneous performance. After he finished I held a itunes set for two hours or so to try to play contemporary indie but ending with Baba O’Reily and Atmosphere.

The opening of the evening was served by Saxoon and their wipe-out/smash it/noise!noise!noise! “set” of one continuos wall of sound taking something like a half an hour. My ears were bleeding, my eyes were wide open. Definitely deaf, definitely something worth an attention.

Drain at home. What it means? It means the same like Drain anywhere else. Smashing set, booze, rocknroll and blood. Yes, they fight again and they bleed again. Remembering how their drummer looked like after the gig in Brno I may assume they probably won yesterday. Big thanx to these guys for inviting us there and making it happen. The first gig in České Budějovice was a pleasant evening and we were really happy how many of you came to have this party with us. Thanx to you too.

The real deal are the real friends and the real fans. Petra, Lucie and Adam aka Soulmate, Tcha-Tcha and Ringwraith. To see these guys anywhere and especially just in front of stage makes me after all these gigs feel almost like at home. Almost. To enhance this feeling, Soulmate invited us to her mother’s house to have chilli con carne and couple of hours of sleep. Unfortunately, we forgot the alcohol, so we finished the house reserva: a bottle of wine and couple of beers. Then we were singing to sleeping Šmity a song about what you shouldn’t forget when you want to party.

5 hours of sleep and we went back to the city to find a) Adrian’s bag b) Alex’s PC adaptor c) Alex’s shades d) a place to sit down and have a coffee with Petr Hanousek, my friend who was there with his family. We found the cafe. At least. The rest was found by Vodouch in a car and by Martin from Drain in the club. The “friday easyjet” guys thankfuly nod to these people!

Now as I am reading a comic strip making a fun out of this band and the “miserable state” pointing out the second record and new promo pictures I already know that till the end of this week I will be ready to bring you some really breaking news (and not just blah-blahs) and some really strange pictures even sooner.

Big hair time.

We had a great rehearsal tonight with Luk and Stevie. We combined a new motif I came up with today with an older Stevie’s song and created a power chord anthemic hard rock opus that a normal indie band would be ashamed to play. But not The Prostitutes. With our kinky interest in The Who, Cream and Ten Years After we think it’s alright. I already came up with a name for the song and now I am trying to put down some “lyrics”. It’s gonna be called Sound of Falling Apart and the sound of it will be like that. If not, and Adrian and Šmity will kill this idea immediately, it helped me today to decrease the level of overall depression and anger at least. Sometimes you need these monster-rock ballads, don’t you? Sometimes you are basically over all these ding-ding-indie moans and mews and you want to roar and destroy. And this tune should be about this. Let’s see how it develops.

For those who are interested to see me, I am going to be a guest of today’s TV program “Před půlnocí” on ČT 24 representing The Prostitutes and talking about Mezi ploty festival. Starting 23:32.

By the way, our dear readers, I had a better opinion of you. This is the most common words leading people to this blog. The world is full of filth. Especially in Brno.

Echoes of Majáles and invitation for Anifest.

Thanx! Majáles was simply great. Which one? Each one. Zlín was just mind-blowing with that enormous attendance and, forgetting the column in the middle of the stage between me and Adrian, it was just how I always wanted to be. Praha was a tiny-stage-apprehension turned into big-gig-elevation. Again, great crowd and many cool reactions. Majáles got me really.

Yesterday Brno: We came when Tata Bojs were having the soundcheck and when we saw the stadium, we went “Bloody hell, what a crowd!” It looked like a gig of the year with all these people streaming from one side to another. We had a place at a indoor stage. Fával club is a cool place but “cool” was pretty far away from reality. Hot and steamy as hundreds and hundreds people were trying to get in and out constantly, one toilet, cues for anything, loading from backstage (actually placed in the “backvenue”) over all of of you was worse than a nightmare. I decided to go to a toilet some time befor the sound check and this whole operation took me 25 minutes (spending actually less than a minute inside of the room). But, sometimes you have to go literally through a hell to end up in a paradise: and it was you! Great crowd, great atmosphere. The guy in front of Adrian, looking like a younger member of Sunshine, singing Top! Top! The Radio! into She’s Dead made a great mash-up out of this improvisation reproducing Kay really well and made me laugh really. Šmity gave me a heavy-metal-hug during the last song and overall we had a good time on stage except one thing. My heart unfortunately “went boom” in couple of last days, so I didn’t feel very well, respectively I felt seriously bad. I was trying to keep myself kind of alright by drinking a lot of water, but still my health state forced me to be rather static, focused on basic life functions and basic chords.

But as I said the crowd was fantastic and we really enjoyed the concert. Thanx for your reaction, thanx for your myspace comments.

There are definitely couple of things which should be solved next time in logistics and organization, but overall we were GLAD to come over and play and we’ll gladly come back again! All the difficulties of the club were summed up after the concert by a guy parking his car right in the way of our van making the leaving really hard and risky. When Radek (our driver) asked the guy to park his car somewhere else, the appropriate answer was: “I am the fuckin’ owner of this club so you better shut up otherwise I fuckin’ punch you!” Not completely a Tony Wilson model, but pretty close, just more elemental.

I survived the concert but on the way home I decided to go straight to a hospital. Praha, Karlovo náměstí. EKG, blood tests of all kind and all this stuff and after two and half hours I felt at least psychologically better: it’s not a heart attack. I am not dying yet. Pretty good for a thursday, isn’t it?

Tomorrow, you can see us at Anifest in Třeboň. We are going to play there with Tata Bojs to celebrate the festival of animated films. Be there at 8PM please, as we have to start on time! Looking forward to see your animated bodies on the floor!
